Beneath the Draper Moon: A Novel by Julius Parker
Julius Parker

Julius Parker

Julius Parker, a lifelong Southerner, hails from Charleston, South Carolina where his family’s construction business fostered a tight-knit, diverse community. Raised amidst the rich flavors and Gullah dialects of the South, Julius’ unique upbringing during the transformative 1970s instilled in him a profound appreciation for all individuals.

Beneath the Draper Moon, a novel inspired by his quest to uncover the truth of the African American journey to freedom, stands as a testament to his deep-rooted love for history and humanity. Julius makes his home with his wife in McClellanville, SC, a sleepy shrimping village just north of Charleston. He has two daughters who attend Clemson University, and a son who is an attorney in New York. Julius holds an undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston, and a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Praise

This book is a must read! It is very well written with courage, delicacy, and heart. The character development was deep and compelling. I did not want to put the book down. Loved that the chapters were on the shorter side, kept me reading as I thought, "oh I have time for one more!". The intertwining of the characters through the generations was brilliantly written. The themes were timely and speak to our current culture as well. This author is new to the scene and I can't wait until he publishes more. Hats off to you Julius Parker!

Beneath the Draper Moon is a beautifully written novel and a genuine page turner. The characters are deeply developed and richly complex, and the author skillfully weaves their stories into a stunning tapestry of Southern and American history. While the tale told in Draper Moon is expansive, I finished the book in a few days - some parts were so good and moving, I immediately went back and read them again after I had reached the end. I've given several copies to family & friends. It's a book with something for everyone - a nation-forming adventure that spans a generation!- but beneath the action and the characters is a potent meditation on home, identity and human connection. I look forward to Mr. Parker's next book!

Parker's "Beneath the Draper Moon" effectively shines a light on the heart-breaking conditions that newly freed slaves endured after the Civil War, as well as the time of Jim Crow laws and unrest in the 60s. He smoothly switches the timelines between those two periods and gives you the hope that those histories would eventually converge, and that so many wrongs could possibly be made right.

I thoroughly enjoyed this walk through a sad time in our country's history, and want to believe that one day, we will move past such divisiveness as a nation. Beautiful writing, well-defined characters, and gripping story line. Great first novel, Julius Parker! Keep up the awesome writing!!
